Dwellers From The Earth
Where CLAY from beneath meets CRAZY from within - and Dwellers are born.
Where CLAY from beneath meets CRAZY from within - and Dwellers are born.
A very brief history about face jugs for those who want to know more . . .
Many years ago, slaves were not allowed to have headstones on their graves, so family members resorted to placing face jugs on their graves to mark where they were buried. The uglier and more frightening the jugs were, the more they believed the jugs would ward off evil spirits. Now you know why some of these faces are SO UGLY!!!
Moving forward in time, during the Prohibition Era, people were known to hide moonshine in their homes. It was believed that storing moonshine in these ugly, evil and scary jugs would keep the children at bay. The scarier, the better.
I am retired and loving it. After moving to sunny Florida, I pursued my dream to make pottery. While I collect the work of other potters, there are SO MANY FACES that need to be given life. I work from my tiny house while sculpting & glazing at my kitchen table. I always have plenty of company with my Dwellers nearby.
I see these things in my sleep. While some might wake up terrified, I find inspiration in the creatures that invade my dreams.
As an animal lover, I often find my hands sculpting different types of animals. From birds to fish . . . and sometimes unidentifiable hybrids . . . but most especially cats. Lots of cats. I love cats.
Most collectors identify face jugs as being male. But I have found a special space for female jugs. Give that gal some lipstick and a pair of earrings, and she will rock your collection! Girl Power!!!
